Hands-on Nature Science Program at Baltimore Woods for kids ages 5-13

 This four-week series offers hands-on experiences in nature to supplement your science curriculum. Every Tuesday, we’ll meet up for a three hour program packed with experiments, activities, and outdoor exploration. Rain, snow, or sunshine – we will happily go outside! The cost is $40 for members; $60 for the public. Pre-registration is required and all four sessions are included in this price.  Themes for each week are listed below.

May Theme Weeks

Life Cycles
May 4 from 1-4pm

From toads to trees everything has a life cycle and for many spring is the perfect time to start theirs. This week we will explore the life cycles of plants and animals all over the preserve through activities and games.


Wacky and Wild 
May 11 from 1-4pm

Strange things are popping up all over Baltimore Woods! Through activities and exploration we will be investigating the weird and wild plants and animals that live here on the preserve.

Birds of a Feather
May 18 from 1-4pm

Tweet tweet! There are so many types of birds that look and sound different from one another. This week we will search the preserve for birds and do activities to learn about their life cycles and adaptations.

Pollination Station
May 25 from 1-4pm

What’s the buzz? With flowers blooming all around us, pollinators are as busy as can be! Let’s find out how and why flowers need to be pollinated through activities and exploration.

More details: This program is planned to be entirely outdoors, so please dress for the weather. Lessons are suited for ages 5-13. Students must pre-register for the entire series. Adults are encouraged, but not required to join the group, and must stay on-site during the program. Bring a water bottle and a small snack. At Baltimore Woods Nature Center, the health and safety of our staff and visitors is of utmost importance. All in-person programming will follow best practices for keeping our participants safe, including health screenings, physical distancing and wearing facial coverings.

June Theme Weeks

Small But Mighty
June 1 from 1-4pm

Did you know that ants can lift over 50 times their body weight? Let’s learn about the little things in nature that are often overlooked. We’ll take a closer look at nature by investigating moss, rolling logs, and following ants.


Mammals
June 8 from 1-4pm

What do voles, moles, foxes, and other furry animals have in common? They are all mammals! This week we will explore the lives of our furry friends through activities and games.

Nature’s Builders
June 15 from 1-4pm

Calling all budding builders! Today we will be busy as beavers, birds, and foxes with activities, crafts, and games to help us create and build just like our animal friends. Grab your hard hat, your imagination, and let’s get building!

Wonderful Water 
June 22 from 1-4pm

It falls, it flows, it’s fun to play in! This week we will explore water through the eyes of what lives in it and how it acts around other things. Get ready to dive right into the world of water!
