This virtual program is back by popular demand! As you’re hiking along the Overlook Trail at Baltimore Woods, you come across a large fence. What is that for? That fence protects a rare habitat in New York called a Rich Sloping Fen. Still have questions? Join us to learn about this amazing habitat and the volunteer driven effort to protect it. Hear from Don Faber-Langendoen, an ecologist with NatureServe, Randy Nonenmacher, a volunteer The Woods, and Gregory McGee, a professor at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. These special guests will walk us through the planning behind this project, the importance of this rare ecological area, and the ongoing research that has stemmed from it.

Do you love camping – but hate how noisy, crowded, and expensive campgrounds can be? Would you like to leave campgrounds behind, and camp out in the wilderness – but are unsure if you have what it takes?

There are over 600,000 acres in New York State and over 350 million acres in the U.S. where you can camp in the wilderness for free and you don’t need to be a survival expert or have lots of expensive gear to start enjoying camping in the wild. Join wilderness skills instructor, Jeff Devine, on August 6th to learn the ins and outs of wild camping. We will cover how to find places to wild camp, what to bring when there are no amenities, selecting a site, setting up your camp, and staying safe and comfortable for a night in the wild.

This program is for adults and teens ages 15 and up.
Cost: $20 members; $30 public
