Stewardship project team at Baltimore Woods.

What is TREES Crew?

TREES stands for Targeted Restoration and Engagement in Environmental Stewardship. This program is a community group centered around ecological restoration at Baltimore Woods through service.

Each meeting the crew will be working to remove invasive species and promote healthy ecosystems at Baltimore Woods through:

  • Hand cutting and pulling brushy invasives like buckthorn privet and honeysuckle
  • Managing invasive plants to keep intact habitats invasive free
  • Planting and seeding areas with native seeds and plants from local sources

Participant Details: Projects will be physically involved and may include some lifting and hauling in areas with thick undergrowth. Work with hand tools including hand saws, shovels, weed wrenches, and prying bars is is common, our stewardship staff will teach participants how to use these tools. Participants should wear long pants, close-toed shoes, weather appropriate clothes, bring an appropriate amount of water, and be prepared to work. Heavy rain will postpone the work day. These volunteer projects are for ages 18 and up. Participants should plan to meet stewardship staff in the pavilion at the start of the work day.

What Does a Typical Workday Look Like?

The group will meet in the pavilion at 10:00am for snacks and introductions. This introduction period will also focus on explaining what work the group will do that day, the purpose of what the group is doing, and cover any updates from prior efforts. The group will then get to work from 10:20am-12:00pm

The Benefits of Joining TREES Crew

  • Spend time outdoors and stay active throughout the year, something that can be especially difficult during the winter months.
  • Participants will learn about identification of invasive and native plants, invasive species removal, use of hand tools, and habitat restoration/management in general. They will leave with the skills to manage those species at other sites as well.
  • Help to enhance habitat for native wildlife, and keep native species on the landscape for years to come, and for all to experience.
  • Gain experience that is relevant in conservation, land management, and environmental, and fields.
  • Meet and network with like-minded people as part of a community interested in protecting nature and spending time outdoors.
