November 2025

By Kat Resanovich, Volunteer Coordinator & Educator

Now that we’ve had our first couple of snow days this Winter, it’s time for a volunteer spotlight that focuses on all of the volunteers who help us manage the snow around our property. Did you know that every time it snows, volunteers help us remove the snow and ice from our walkways and decks?

When we have snow on the ground during our weekly Wednesday A-Team stewardship volunteers meet, they help us clean off the decks, salt the pathways, and more! When we get more than a couple of inches of snow, one of our longtime volunteers Kevin Quinn snowblows the pathways. Kevin said he’s been clearing snow for 19 years and arrives early at 7:00am, “to make sure everything is clear, and to keep people safe this winter”. Kevin and many other volunteers including John Gilrein, Rose and Ken Burdick, Cono Damato help to make sure that the areas surrounding the interpretive center like the decks and walkways are clear so that visitors can get in. On A-Team days, Rose and Ken often get their early to clear paths for the other volunteers can get in safely

During the first freeze the A-Team also helped us prepare the preserve for winter in many other ways. Some A-Teamers headed out on the trails to put up warning signs about icy trails to help hikers stay safe this winter. Some made salt mixtures for de-icing pathways. Another group pulled our snowshoes out of the basement (did you know we have snowshoe rentals in the winter?), while some volunteers Paul Mooney and Guy Swenson have been helping us remake the rental binder to make it easier for front desk assistants to use. A large group helped to prepare our plant nursery for the winter by heeling in plants to protect their roots during the cold winter. Thanks to all of our volunteer help we are ready for another snowy and exciting winter at the Woods. If you see one of our volunteers clearing the pathways, make sure to say a big thank you for keeping us all safe this winter!
