DESCRIPTION:What do you get when you mix a hike\, expert naturalists\, room to explore\, and a dash of serendipity? Trail School: October Explorations! Inspired by one of the great naturalists of the 19th century\, Enos Mills\, each excursion will take us on an adventure as we explore away from the main trails. Our 182-acre “classroom” is rich with diverse habitats\, including streams\, forests\, wetlands\, beaver ponds\, and open meadows. $30 members; $45 public. This is a three-week series of adventures for kids ages 5-13\, which meets weekly on Friday mornings from 9am-12pm at Baltimore Woods Nature Center in Marcellus. Seats for this program are limited. DESCRIPTION:One remarkable day in autumn\, when the trees are a flutter with the colors of fall\, the enchanted side of Baltimore Woods shimmers through. Fairies\, trolls\, and other fantastical creatures can be seen and heard frolicking through the forest. Those bridge trolls are at it again! They have imprisoned the Fairy Queen and it is up to all humans and magical creatures to free her. Along the Enchanted Trail you will meet many such creatures who will help you on your quest – a potion maker in the Wee Folk Forest\, a fortune-telling mermaid\, minstrels\, and more! This four-week series of adventures for kids ages 6-12 offers hands-on experiences in nature to supplement your science curriculum. Every Tuesday\, we’ll meet up for a three hour program packed with  experiments\, activities\, and outdoor exploration. Rain\, snow\, or sunshine – we will happily go outside! Themes for each week are listed below\, so get ready for some October exploration! \nRegister for Science Adventures in Nature!\nSigns of Fall\nOctober 6\, 2020 from 1pm – 4pm\n \nOur first day together is all about the changing season! We’ll explore why the leaves change color\, check in\non what animals at The Woods are up to\, and figure out why fall has such a specific smell. We’ll also spend\nsome time making our own nature journals to track experiments\, ideas\, and cool finds over the next few\nweeks. \nConversations in Nature\nOctober 13\, 2020 from 1pm – 4pm \nFrom warning calls and scent trails to camouflage and more\, animals use their five senses to communicate.\nToday we will follow our noses\, listen for sounds\, and practice our camouflage to communicate like the\nanimals of the forest! \nWild\, Wild\, Woods\nOctober 20\, 2020 from 1pm – 4pm \nHave you ever made your own candles or walked through the woods without a map? This week we’ll\nexplore that and much more! Let’s pretend we’re in pioneer days and discover how people used their\nsurroundings to survive. \nThe Art of Nature\nOctober 27\, 2020 from 1pm – 4pm \nThis week we will use journaling\, painting\, sketching\, and writing to bring scientific observation of the\nnatural world to life on the page and in our memories. DESCRIPTION:As you’re hiking along the overlook trail you come across a large fence. What is that for? That fence protects a rare habitat in New York called a Rich Sloping Fen. Still have questions? Join Naturalist Lexi to learn about this amazing habitat and the volunteer driven effort to protect it. Hear from Don Faber-Langendoen\, an ecologist with NatureServe\, Randy Nonenmacher\, a volunteer The Woods\, and Gregory McGee\, a professor at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. DESCRIPTION:Each spring during the first warm rainy night after the equinox\, hundreds of amphibians move from underground lairs to vernal pools. To find out when Baltimore Woods will attempt to observe this migration at Labrador Hollow\, watch for alerts on our website\, or sign up online to be put on our alert list.  Bring a flashlight and dress for the weather. Keep an eye on your email for updates and alerts. \nRuns March 19 – Mid-April\nProgram for ages 5 and up.\n$6 members; $9 public. \nWe will continue to accept sign-ups for our alert list\, but please stay tuned as we are working to develop a new way to deliver this program.   \nSign me up for the Amphibian Alert List!
