DESCRIPTION:Sketching offers a fascinating window into nature’s beauty and diversity. In this series for older teens and adults\, we will sharpen our observation skills with fun exercises to learn about proportions\, shading\, texture\, and colors. Each session includes an exploration around the preserve and sketching along the trails or back in the program room. During winter or inclement weather\, sketching will take place in the Interpretive Center.\n\nAll sketching materials are provided\, including pencils\, colored pencils\, pens\, and paper. You are welcome to bring your own supplies if you prefer. We encourage attending multiple monthly sessions to build your skills\, but this is not required. In this session\, we will sketch birds visiting our feeders through the window. We will also use taxidermy mounts and photos as references to learn about bird anatomy\, feather groups\, and tips for drawing birds in motion. Before sketching\, we will go for a brief walk with binoculars for inspiration.\n\n\nRegistration for Nature Sketching: Birds is now closed\n\n\nMore Details: This program is designed for ages 14 and up. DESCRIPTION:On wintry nights\, owls call among the trees and wander about the woods on silent wings. Join us to tune into your senses and experience the nighttime world of owls. We will go for a quiet walk through the forest\, pausing in several spots to call for owls. We will also learn about owl adaptations through activities and an up close look at wings and bones.\n\n\nRegistration for Family Field Nights: Family Owl Prowl is now closed\n\n\nMore Details: This program is designed for families (kids age 5+). Space is limited. Online pre-registration is required. Snowshoes will be provided if necessary. Please bring a flashlight; extras are available if needed. Pricing is per family; there must be at least one adult per family. Family size includes up to 4 children. This program is free for member families. This program will include a walk on the Valley Trail loop\, which is one of our most difficult trails with hilly terrain\, natural surfaces\, and roots.

This program may involve traveling to various birding locations by car\, with the starting location at the Onondaga Lake Trail (300 Creekwalk\, Syracuse\, NY 13204). Bring your family on an adventure to experience Baltimore Woods as the sun sets and night time settles in. We will go on a short hike leading to our campfire to share traditional and modern stories\, songs\, and of course s’mores!\n\n\nRegistration for Family Field Night: Campfire Tales is now closed\n\n\nMore Details: Registration is per family and designed for children ages 8+.\nThis program is planned to follow parts of the Valley Trail and Boundary Trail. These difficult trails have narrow and steep sections with roots and loose soil. The surfaces may be snow-covered\, icy\, or muddy this time of year. Resting benches are available. Our total route will be about 1 mile.\n

SUMMARY:Nature Sketching: Mammals (CLOSED)
DESCRIPTION:Sketching offers a fascinating window into nature’s beauty and diversity. In this series for adults\, we will sharpen our observation skills with fun exercises to learn about proportions\, shading\, texture\, and colors. Each session includes an exploration around the preserve and sketching along the trails or back in the program room. During winter or inclement weather\, sketching will take place in the Interpretive Center. \nAll sketching materials are provided\, including pencils\, colored pencils\, pens\, and paper. You are welcome to bring your own supplies if you prefer. We encourage attending multiple monthly sessions to build your skills\, but this is not required. \nIn this session\, we will sketch mammals including squirrels visiting our feeders through the window. We will also use taxidermy mounts and photos as references to learn about mammal anatomy\, fur texture\, and tips for drawing mammals in motion. Before sketching\, we will go for a brief walk for inspiration. We will walk on relatively flat trails near the building. \n\n\nRegistration for Nature Sketching: Mammals is now closed\n\n\nMore Details: This program is designed for ages 14 and up. In some cases\, these birds pass the lookouts by the thousands! Join Naturalist and former Derby Hill Hawk Counter Anna Stunkel at Derby Hill to learn about these birds’ journeys\, get an insider’s perspective on how and why this research is conducted\, and learn some observation tips for watching raptors on the move. DESCRIPTION:Join us to get outside\, learn about restoration and stewardship work\, and meet other people interested in protecting the environment! Join the TREES (Targeted Restoration and Engagement in Environmental Stewardship) crew to do invasive species management and native plant restoration to protect our preserve for generations to come. We will meet the first and third Saturday of the month.  \nRegistration is not required\, but you can reach out to volunteer@baltimorewoods.org or fill out the TREES Crew Interest Form to be added to the TREES Crew email list.
