DESCRIPTION:Be a part of the first restoration project on the newest part of the Baltimore Woods Preserve! Join the Baltimore Woods Nature Center Stewardship Team and Habitat Gardeners of Central New York to plant tree seeds\, tree seedlings\, and protect them inside our new 5 acre restoration fence on the newly acquired property. This is the first exciting step to transform what is currently an open field to a diverse oak forest to create space for future trails and programs – and to be enjoyed by you and our community for years to come! \nYou can also attend our free Earth Day community event in the afternoon. Learn more about the 2022 Earth Day Celebration at Baltimore Woods Nature Center! \nThis event has projects for both adults and children. Please bring your own shovels and/or trowels. Dress accordingly\, as you will be working in muddy conditions. Participants should plan to arrive by 9AM and should park in the staff parking lot.

DESCRIPTION:Experience nature in a unique way on a guided Forest Therapy Walk throughout Baltimore Woods! Forest Therapy\, also known as “forest bathing\,” stems from a Japanese practice known as Shinrin Yoku. Led by June Leo-Randazzo\, a Certified ANFT Forest Therapy Guide\, this program invites participants to immerse themselves in nature and open their senses to the surroundings of the forest. \n\n\nExtensive scientific research has found forest therapy walks to have numerous physical health benefits including activation of the ‘rest and restore’ parasympathetic nervous system\, decreases to anxiety and depression\, improving creativity\, and much more. Your stress will peel away as your nervous system relaxes and you simply experience the medicine of the forest. \nJune will provide a series of relaxing invitations to engage all your senses\, release your mind chatter\, and deepen connections to nature\, allowing you to connect with yourself and others through nature in new ways. You will have opportunities throughout for both individual reflection and to come together as a group to listen and share what we are noticing. The walk ends with a tea ceremony with wildcrafted tea foraged from the local area and snacks. \nThis program is for adults.\nCost: $30 \n\nRegister to experience a Forest Therapy Walk at Baltimore Woods!\nMore details: Space is limited. Pre-registration is required. This is an experience that allows you to relax through a slow and mindful walk with pauses at times. It covers less than a mile on mainly flat trails with some unevenness lasting 2.5-3 hrs.\, depending on the size of the group.  \n\n\nYou will be notified by email 2 days prior on the exact location at Baltimore Woods to meet for the walk. Come prepared for the weather. You may want to bring a water bottle to keep hydrated. Be sure to bring rain gear or an umbrella if rain is forecasted. SUMMARY:Blacksmithing Workshop: Forge Your Own Fire Poker
DESCRIPTION:Make your own fire poker from red hot steel using the ancient craft of blacksmithing! This three hour hands-on class will introduce you to blacksmithing and working with hot iron to make useful objects. You will learn techniques like drawing out\, bending\, twisting\, scrolling\, and more to create a unique fire poker to take home with you. We will also cover correct hammer technique and use of anvils\, vises\, and tongs. Come and spend an evening making your own hand-made item. \n\n\n\n\nLocal artist blacksmith Mark Teece will be teaching you how to forge red hot steel using traditional techniques from this ancient craft. Mark is an artist blacksmith who has been teaching for 10 years and is a patient teacher of this craft. He provides excellent instruction in forging techniques and individual help as the classes are small with a maximum of 8 students. Mark’s own work includes a number of public art projects\, architectural ironwork\, and bespoke forged ironwork for the home including tables\, artwork\, and fireplace tools. You can follow his work on Instagram @thebritishblacksmith or at thebritishblacksmith.com. \n\n\n\nThe class is open to students of all skill levels and is limited to 8 students. We will provide everything you need to have an enjoyable evening. Expect to leave with basic forging skills and the knowledge needed to forge hot steel. This is a great time to compare the structure of trees in various habitats by sketching them. In this program\, we will explore the trails\, draw trees and perhaps a few evergreen ferns that we meet along the way\, and learn how field sketching can help to deepen our observation skills. \nThis program is designed for adults.\nPlease note that this program will involve a brief hike on moderately hilly terrain. Drawing materials will be provided\, including waterproof sketching paper if necessary. Please dress for the weather and bring a portable camp chair if you have one. DESCRIPTION:Come for guided walk with our Land Steward to see how taking care of the land today has everything to do with the people and nature of the past. As our nature preserve grows\, we are very busy making and implementing stewardship plans. On this hike around the preserve\, we’ll discuss the ecological and human history of Baltimore Woods and how that informs the next generation of stewardship. \nThis program is designed for adults.\nThis hike will include hills and uneven terrain.
