DESCRIPTION:Get ready for Science Adventures in March! This four-week series offers hands-on experiences in nature to supplement your science curriculum. Every Tuesday\, we’ll meet up for a three-hour program packed with experiments\, activities\, and outdoor exploration. Rain\, snow\, or sunshine – we will happily go outside! Themes for each week are listed below! $40 members; $60 public. Pre-registration is required and all four sessions are included in this price. \nRegister for March Science Adventures in Nature!\nRain\, and Snow\, and Sun…Oh My!\nMarch 2\, 2021 from 1-4pm \nMarch can be a wacky weather month so this week we will explore different types of weather and the effects of weather changes on the plants and animals. Get ready to make your own weather forecast\, start a weather journal\, and participate in weather experiments! \nMaple Sugaring\nMarch 9\, 2021 from 1-4pm \nIt’s maple sugaring time at Baltimore Woods! This week we’ll explore the sugar bush and learn all about the process of how we turn sap into maple syrup. Get ready to do a little taste testing of the sap and syrup\, yum! \nScience of Mud\nMarch 16\, 2021 from 1-4pm \nPlaying in mud is fun for everyone of all ages but this week we are going to dig in and explore some of the science behind mud. What is it? Where can you find it? Do plants and animals live in it? We’ll answer these questions and more and maybe even make some mud pies. \nEquinox Extravaganza\nMarch 23\, 2021 from 1-4pm \nThe Spring Equinox is here! This week we’ll learn about what an equinox is and how people of the past have celebrated these turning points in the year. Together we’ll create our own activities and games for a group Equinox Festival at the end of the day! \nMore details: This program is planned to be entirely outdoors\, so please dress for the weather. Lessons are suited for ages 5-13. Students must pre-register for the entire series. Adults are encouraged\, but not required to join the group\, and must stay on-site during the program. DESCRIPTION:Bare branches and fewer birds makes for the perfect time to learn the basics of birdwatching. We’ll grab binoculars and set out onto the preserve to hone our skills and discover how special winter bird watching really is. We will go for a short hike\, please come dressed for the weather. DESCRIPTION:The great naturalist Edwin Way Teale wrote that winter is a time of superlative life. The abilities of plants and animals to survive the cold Central New York winters are varied and astounding. Follow along as Naturalist Tom Meier sets forth to understand the adaptations and drive of winter wildlife in a time when giving up is not an option. Program for ages 5 and up. \nRegister for Superlative Life!\nA Virtual Program Available for viewing February 5-26\nWhen you register\, we’ll ask you to provide the email you’d like to use to view the program. On February 5th at 12pm\, all registered participants will receive a personal email invitation with a link to view the program directly from YouTube. The program will be available for viewing until February 26th at 12pm.  \nRegistration for this program will be rolling throughout the month\, allowing participants who sign up any time before February 25th at 12pm to receive an invitation link within 24 hours.  \nWe are pleased to continue to offer virtual program experiences for our community to have engaging experiences with nature and stay connected with the Baltimore Woods preserve and staff no matter where you are! These programs take our education team significant time and effort to produce and if you can support us with a donation\, it is greatly appreciated. DESCRIPTION:Inspired by one of the great naturalists of the 19th century\, Enos Mills\, each excursion will take us on an adventure as we explore away from the main trails. Our 182-acre “classroom” is rich with diverse habitats\, including streams\, forests\, wetlands\, beaver ponds\, and open meadows. This three-week series runs weekly on Thursday afternoons. $30 members; $45 public. Pre-registration is required and the price includes all three weeks. Program designed for children ages 5-13. Themes for each week are listed below\, so get ready for some February exploration! \nRegister for Trail School: February Explorations!\nFinding Foxes\nFebruary 4\, 2021 from 1-4pm \nBaltimore Woods is full of foxes! This week we are going to follow their tracks\, find their dens\, and see if we can be foxes too! \nForest Bumble\nFebruary 11\, 2021 from 1-4pm \nThis week we will go on a “bumble” through the woods\, following wherever our feet or instincts take us. Prepare for a grand adventure where we will let our imaginations run wild. \nOverlooks\, Fields\, and Forests\nFebruary 25\, 2021 from 1-4pm \nIt’s a winter wonderland and the Overlook and Field to Forest trails will lead us to a world of discovery.\nLet’s explore and see what we can find! \n* Please note there will be no Trail School on February 18 as day camp is in session. \nWhat can you expect from Trail School? This program focuses on child-led learning through play and exploration with the guidance of a naturalist who knows the preserve and the skills to encourage discovery\, inquiry\, experimentation\, and imagination. Menzies for an intimate exploration of Woodlands and Water: Paintings of Meaningful Places\, a nature-inspired collection of oil paintings on display at Baltimore Woods Nature Center. Led by art-gallery coordinator Karen Jean Smith\, participants will get an up-close look at a few of the featured oil paintings\, learn more from Diane about the inspiration and process behind the work\, and share their own personal stories or experiences that Diane’s artwork inspires. \nArtists and nature-lovers alike will enjoy learning more about the artistic process and engage with this collection in a unique way. This week we’ll go in search of the forgotten trees and discover how they are doing an important job for winter wildlife. \nWhat can you expect from Trail School? This program focuses on child-led learning through play and exploration with the guidance of a naturalist who knows the preserve and the skills to encourage discovery\, inquiry\, experimentation\, and imagination. Each day will include a hike through the forests and fields\, often away from the main trail system. Naturalists will have field guides\, magnifying lenses\, observation jars\, and other tools of discovery to help children deepen their curiosity and facilitate on-the-spot learning. Of course\, nature itself will provide anything else we need\, and there will be time for free play and the space for each child to connect with nature in their own way. Themes for each week are listed below\, so get ready for some November exploration! \nRegister for Trail School: November Explorations!\nRegistration Opens October 27\nBlending Into the Forest\nNovember 5\, 2020 from 1-4pm \nUsed by creatures of all shapes and size\, camouflage helps prey hide and predators stalk. As we traverse\nthe woods for places to explore\, we’ll search for camouflaged critters and observe the adaptations that\nkeep them hidden. \nThe Beaver Lands\nNovember 12\, 2020 from 1-4pm \nEvidence of beaver activity is found throughout most of the Baltimore Woods preserve. From beaver chews\nto old and current dams\, we’ll discover the wonders of these aquatic mammals through exploration! \nVenture to Peanut Hill\nNovember 19\,2020 from 1-4pm \nDo you like to build forts? Let’s hike to Peanut Hill and build a mighty fortress! We’ll explore the forests\nalong the way and play a grand game at the end of the day! \nWhat can you expect from Trail School? This program focuses on child-led learning through play and exploration with the guidance of a naturalist who knows the preserve and who will provide children with the opportunities to further their interests outside. There will be tools like critter catchers\, magnifying glasses\, and of course whatever we can make with the natural tools around us that help facilitate children deepening their curiosity and discovery. A lot of our learning will be on-the-spot and there will be imaginative play and time for each child to connect with nature in their own way. \nMore details: This program is planned to be entirely outdoors\, so please dress for the weather. Lessons are suited for ages 5-13. Students must pre-register for the entire series and must be accompanied by an adult. Adults are required to accompany children ages 5-9 during the program. DESCRIPTION:Science Adventures in Nature is back for November! This four week series offers hands-on experiences in nature to supplement your science curriculum. Every  Tuesday\, we’ll meet up for a three hour program packed with experiments\, activities\, and outdoor exploration. Rain\, snow\, or sunshine – we will happily go outside! For the first week of Science Adventures in Nature this month we will explore the different places plants and animals live here at The Woods. We will look for dens\, find food\, and see what animals are out and about. \nSmall\, But Mighty\nNovember 10\, 2020 from 1pm – 4pm \nGrab your magnifying glasses and get ready to explore the world of small things! This week we will be learning about the little things in nature that are often overlooked. We’ll be taking a closer look at nature by investigating moss\, looking for fungus\, and rolling logs. \nHibernate\, Migrate\, Acclimate\nNovember 17\, 2020 from 1pm – 4pm \nWill they go to sleep\, head south\, or tough it out? Find out this week as we explore the different ways animals prepare for and survive the winter! \nCSI\nNovember 24\, 2020 from 1pm – 4pm \nGet your detective skills ready! This week we will discover the different evidence that animals leave behind all over the forest. DESCRIPTION:One remarkable day in autumn\, when the trees are a flutter with the colors of fall\, the enchanted side of Baltimore Woods shimmers through. Fairies\, trolls\, and other fantastical creatures can be seen and heard frolicking through the forest. Those bridge trolls are at it again! They have imprisoned the Fairy Queen and it is up to all humans and magical creatures to free her. Along the Enchanted Trail you will meet many such creatures who will help you on your quest – a potion maker in the Wee Folk Forest\, a fortune-telling mermaid\, minstrels\, and more!
