DESCRIPTION:Registration for this program is closed.\n\nMore daylight and warming weather will bring creatures out around the water. With nets\, buckets\, and boots\, we will be looking for and observing stream insects and their amazing adaptations. Lets meet the emerging life of Baltimore Brook! \n\nMore details: This program is designed for adults. Space is limited. Online pre-registration is required. This program will follow packed dirt trails with some exposed roots and bridge steps. The surfaces may be muddy or icy this time of year. Our total route will be about 1 mile. Going into the stream is optional. There is a lightly sloped trail into the stream\, which has shallow\, ankle-deep water\, loose stones and sediment. Waterproof overshoes can be provided.

Open to all interested adult members of the community\, we will meet at the Interpretive Center (or outside if weather permits) one Saturday a month to delve into a reading of fiction or creative nonfiction chosen by participants. Our April meeting will take place on April 5 from 10:30 AM to Noon. \nRegistration for this program closes at 3pm on Wednesday\, April 2. \nDiscussion leader Todd Stregiel is thrilled to have an opportunity to join with others in the community by bringing together two of his abiding passions— reading good books and appreciating nature’s wonders. He is a Skaneateles native with a dedication to lifelong learning having made a career as a teacher in  alternative and adult education settings. Todd’s wide range of interests include history\, philosophy\, nature photography\, camping\, and singing in a community choir.

DESCRIPTION:Registration for this program is closed.\nExperience nature in a unique way on a guided Forest Therapy Walk throughout Baltimore Woods! Forest Therapy\, also known as “forest bathing\,” stems from a Japanese practice known as Shinrin Yoku. Led by June Leo-Randazzo\, a Certified ANFT Forest Therapy Guide\, this program invites participants to immerse themselves in nature and open their senses to the surroundings of the forest. \nExtensive scientific research has found forest therapy walks to have numerous physical health benefits including activation of the ‘rest and restore’ parasympathetic nervous system\, decreases to anxiety and depression\, improving creativity\, and much more. Your stress will peel away as your nervous system relaxes and you simply experience the medicine of the forest. \nDuring this slow\, mindful\, and quiet walk\, June will provide a series of relaxing invitations to engage all your senses\, release your mind chatter\, and deepen connections to nature\, allowing you to connect with yourself and others through nature in new ways. You will have opportunities throughout for both individual reflection and to come together as a group to listen and share what we are noticing. The 2 hour walk ends with a tea ceremony with wildcrafted tea foraged from the area and snacks. \nRegistration for this program closes at 3pm on Wednesday\, April 2. \nMore details: This walk is designed for adults. Space is limited. Pre-registration is required. You will be notified ahead of the program on where to park and meet on the day of the walk. The walk will take place if it rains or snows. In case cancellation is necessary due to dangerous conditions\, you will be notified by email the morning of the walk. Dress warmly\, this program will be entirely outdoors.

DESCRIPTION:Registration for this program is closed.\n\nIn a single day\, hundreds and sometimes thousands of raptors and other birds may pass Derby Hill Bird Observatory on their way north along the shore of Lake Ontario. Join Naturalist and former Derby Hill Hawk Counter Anna Stunkel at Derby Hill to learn about these birds’ journeys\, get an insider’s perspective on how and why this research is conducted\, and learn some observation tips for watching raptors on the move. For the second part of the trip\, we will look for birds among the hedgerows and do some optional trail work to help maintain the habitat and trail accessibility here.\n\nPlease meet the group at 10 am at Derby Hill Bird Observatory. Dress warmly and bring binoculars if you have them; a few extras will be provided in addition to spotting scopes.\n\nMore details: This program is designed for adults. Space is limited. Online pre-registration is required. We will plan to go for a walk on moderate terrain around the hedgerows for the second part of the program. If parking at the base of the hill is required due to mud\, the hike to the top is more difficult but car rides to the top in the Baltimore Woods vehicle can be accommodated.

SUMMARY:Earth Day Stewardship Project 2025
DESCRIPTION:Be a part of the annual Baltimore Woods restoration project to celebrate Earth Day! Join the Baltimore Woods Nature Center Stewardship Team to plant 350 native warm season grass plugs in a field on our newest 90 acres. These grasses will help increase the native cover of the field that we seeded in 2023\, and establish some larger plants that can give rise to generations of future plants. They will also create some additional structure in a largely flat field.\n\nSign up to be a part of the Earth Day Stewardship Project!\n\n\nMore details: This event has projects for all ages! Participants under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult.  Be sure to bring enough water\, closed toed shoes\, and tick deterrent of your choice. Dress accordingly. The Literature & Nature Book Group at Baltimore Woods welcomes you to nourish and enhance your appreciation of the natural world with ongoing friendly discussions of great writing on that theme. Open to all interested adult members of the community\, we will meet at the Interpretive Center (or outside if weather permits) one Saturday a month to delve into a reading of fiction or creative nonfiction chosen by participants. Our June meeting will take place on June 7 from 10:30 AM to Noon when we will be discussing Finding the Mother Tree by Suzanne Simard. \nRegistration for this program closes at 3pm on Wednesday\, June 4. \nDiscussion leader Todd Stregiel is thrilled to have an opportunity to join with others in the community by bringing together two of his abiding passions— reading good books and appreciating nature’s wonders. SUMMARY:Forest Therapy Walk (CLOSED)
DESCRIPTION:Registration for this program is closed.\nCultures all around the world celebrate the Summer Solstice by reconnecting with nature. This program will consist of a Forest Therapy Walk combined with Summer Solstice rituals. The Summer Solstice reminds us to turn inward and find the nourishment to grow. It is a time to reflect on personal growth and get connected to playfulness\, creativity\, and expanding consciousness into the realm of possibility. \nThe practice of Forest Therapy is grounded in the belief that the earth has wisdom to share with humans when we slow down long enough to pay attention. This practice originated from the Japanese practice called Shinrin Yoku which translates as “Forest Bathing” – it is simply a metaphor for taking in\, or “bathing” in the essential oils the trees/plants naturally emit (also known as phytoncides). The Summer Solstice is an energetically charged day and an important one to set intentions. We will do so through invitations partnering with the nature elements and energies of the Summer Solstice. \nForest Therapy is a practice where you are invited to connect with your body and nature in the present moment. By awakening your senses and slowing down\, you can develop a greater connection and relationship with the forest\, yourself\, and others. This is a very relaxed and mindful way of being in the forest. Forest Therapy Guide June Leo-Randazzo will be offering “invitations” during the program. Participants will have opportunities throughout the walk to gather every so often to share and listen to each other. The walk ends with a tea ceremony serving a special tea from Asia that symbolizes transformation and has been used by traditional ancient communities for centuries. \nThe walk will end with a guided intention setting tea ritual followed by snacks. This is not a hike\, but rather a slow walk to no walk at times. ANFT guides often share that the “The forest is the therapist\, and the guide opens the doors to the senses.” During your experience\, the forest will offer you whatever it is you need. \nRegistration for this program closes at 3pm on Wednesday\, June 18. \nMore details: This walk is designed for adults. Space is limited. Pre-registration is required. You will be notified ahead of the program on where to park and meet on the day of the walk. The walk will take place if it rains or snows. In case cancellation is necessary due to dangerous conditions\, you will be notified by email the morning of the walk. Dress for the weather\, this program will be entirely outdoors.
