DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand!\nWildflower Walk with Famous Poets\n A Virtual Program available for viewing May 7 – 31\nBaltimore Woods has an astonishing display of spring wildflowers. Join Naturalist Emily Overstrom for an inspiring virtual walk while listening to the words of famous poets. We will discover how the ephemeral wildflowers “seize the day” as they help us appreciate living in the moment. This program is designed for adults to enjoy and is free to watch (suggested donation of $10 is appreciated ~ see details below) \nSign up to watch Wildflower Walk with Famous Poets!\nMore details: When you register\, we’ll ask you to provide the email you’d like to use to view the program. On May 7th at 12pm\, all registered participants will receive a personal email invitation from Connect BWNC with a link to view the program directly from Vimeo. The program will be available for viewing until May 31st at 12pm\, so you can watch it more than once if you like! \nRegistration for this program will be rolling throughout the month until May 28th\, allowing participants who sign up any time during the month to receive an invitation link within 24 hours. \nFree program; suggested donation $10: We are pleased to continue to offer virtual program experiences for our community to have engaging experiences with nature and stay connected with the Baltimore Woods preserve and staff no matter where you are! SUMMARY:Trail School: May Explorations
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by one of the great naturalists of the 19th century\, Enos Mills\, each excursion will take us on an adventure through Baltimore Woods as we explore away from the main trails. Our 182-acre “classroom” is rich with diverse habitats\, including streams\, forests\, wetlands\, beaver ponds\, and open meadows. This four-week series runs weekly on Thursday afternoons. $40 members; $60 public. Pre-registration is required and the price includes all four weeks. Weekly themes for May are listed below\, so get ready to hit the trails! \nRippling Waters\nMay 6 from 1-4pm \nWhere does water go and where does it come from? We’ll go to Phillip’s Pond this week to ponder this question and explore the wildlife that depend on this body of water for survival. \nSwamp Searching\nMay 13 from 1-4pm \nAre there any swamps here at Baltimore Woods? You betcha! This week we’ll hike the preserve in search of those swampy areas of muck and mud and explore just how they got there. \nBackside of the Beaver Ponds\nMay 20 from 1-4pm \nFew people have explored this mysterious location. We’ll hike through forests\, along streams\, and across meadows to get there. It’s sure to be a fun adventure! \nPeanut Hill\nMay 27 from 1-4pm \nSpring has sprung but what does that mean for Peanut Hill? Let’s go on an adventure to this favorite spot and build wondrous forts with sticks uncovered by snowmelt! \nRegister for Trail School: May Explorations!\nMore details: This program is planned to be entirely outdoors\, so please dress for the weather. Check out the June offering where there are limited spaces still available. \nThis four-week series offers hands-on experiences in nature to supplement your science curriculum. Every Tuesday\, we’ll meet up for a three hour program packed with experiments\, activities\, and outdoor exploration. Rain\, snow\, or sunshine – we will happily go outside! Themes for each week are listed below. \nLife Cycles\nMay 4 from 1-4pm \nFrom toads to trees everything has a life cycle and for many spring is the perfect time to start theirs. This week we will explore the life cycles of plants and animals all over the preserve through activities and games. \nWacky and Wild \nMay 11 from 1-4pm \nStrange things are popping up all over Baltimore Woods! Through activities and exploration we will be investigating the weird and wild plants and animals that live here on the preserve. \nBirds of a Feather\nMay 18 from 1-4pm \nTweet tweet! There are so many types of birds that look and sound different from one another. This week we will search the preserve for birds and do activities to learn about their life cycles and adaptations. \nPollination Station\nMay 25 from 1-4pm \nWhat’s the buzz? With flowers blooming all around us\, pollinators are as busy as can be! Let’s find out how and why flowers need to be pollinated through activities and exploration. \nMore details: This program is planned to be entirely outdoors\, so please dress for the weather. SUMMARY:Naturalist Field Days
DESCRIPTION:Come one\, come all to the Naturalist Field Days! This is a great opportunity for families to get outside and come to Baltimore Woods to hone your naturalist skills. As you follow the trail you’ll find self-guided naturalist stations with tools and prompts to complete fun activities\, all while exploring the wildlife and plants found here at Baltimore Woods. Families will investigate animal crime scenes\, enjoy some bird watching\, learn about tracking\, and more! At the end of the program you’ll check-in with our staff to receive your naturalist badge and take home a naturalist toolkit for future adventures at Baltimore Woods and beyond! \nSign up now for the Naturalist Field Days!\nThere will be self-guided naturalist stations set up in a round robin fashion along our trails. The path will be clearly marked indicating where the next station will be. Each station will have an activity focusing on a naturalist skill and are designed for the whole family – including both children and adults  – to participate in the fun! Stations will take approximately 7-10 min to complete and can accommodate up to 6 people. Instructions for how to complete the activity will be provided at each station. Staff members will be on hand to answer questions. This program will be entirely outside so dress for the weather! \nThe activity stations at this family program are designed for ages 2 and up!\nCost: $20 per adult; $10 per child (ages 3-17); Free for children ages 2 and under. \nTo enjoy the full program experience\, we recommend that if you’re bringing more than three children\, you should plan to have two adults in your group.  \nAt Baltimore Woods Nature Center\, the health and safety of our staff and visitors is of utmost importance. By learning a few simple shapes and textures we’ll have you recognizing leafless trees as if they were old friends. Feel revitalized through mindful musings\, inspirational nature imagery and creative nature journaling. Spring came early last year when we first filmed this virtual guided meditation hike. Though this year looks much different\, we can tap into the same restorative energies for a fresh start to this season of growth and renewal! This program is recommended for adults and is free to watch. (suggested donation $10 ~see details below). DESCRIPTION:Inspired by one of the great naturalists of the 19th century\, Enos Mills\, each excursion will take us on an adventure as we explore away from the main trails. Our 182-acre “classroom” is rich with diverse habitats\, including streams\, forests\, wetlands\, beaver ponds\, and open meadows. This four-week series for kids ages 5-13 runs weekly on Thursday afternoons. $40 members; $60 public. Pre-registration is required and the price includes all four weeks. As we explore the Field to Forest trail in search of towering maple trees\, we’ll learn about what the trees are doing and how they are preparing for Spring. \nTo the Overlook\nMarch 18\, 2021 from 1-4pm\nWhat’s growing out on the preserve? DESCRIPTION:Inspired by one of the great naturalists of the 19th century\, Enos Mills\, each excursion will take us on an adventure as we explore away from the main trails. Our 182-acre “classroom” is rich with diverse habitats\, including streams\, forests\, wetlands\, beaver ponds\, and open meadows. This three-week series runs weekly on Thursday afternoons. $30 members; $45 public. Pre-registration is required and the price includes all three weeks. Program designed for children ages 5-13. This week we’ll hike the Boundary Trail to stumble across different\nanimal tracks and leave some of our own. What are the animals up to? What stories do their tracks have to tell? Only one way to know – get out there! \nHigh Hills Navigation\nDecember 10\, 2020 from 1-4pm \nLet’s go for a hike and forget your compass! This week we are going to tune into our surroundings and\ntraverse the high hills of Baltimore Woods using natural landscapes as our navigation guide. \nThe Abandoned Tree Farm\nDecember 17\,2020 from 1-4pm \nDid you know there was once a Christmas Tree Farm at Baltimore Woods? This week we’ll go in search of the forgotten trees and discover how they are doing an important job for winter wildlife. \nWhat can you expect from Trail School? This program focuses on child-led learning through play and exploration with the guidance of a naturalist who knows the preserve and the skills to encourage discovery\, inquiry\, experimentation\, and imagination. Each day will include a hike through the forests and fields\, often away from the main trail system. Naturalists will have field guides\, magnifying lenses\, observation jars\, and other tools of discovery to help children deepen their curiosity and facilitate on-the-spot learning. Of course\, nature itself will provide anything else we need\, and there will be time for free play and the space for each child to connect with nature in their own way. Our naturalists are all CPR and First Aid certified\, carry first aid kits and two-way radios\, and are ready to keep the fun and exploration safe for your child. \nMore details: This program is planned to be entirely outdoors\, so please dress for the weather. DESCRIPTION:Nature’s Little Explorers is a recurring series of mini adventures throughout the year\, designed especially for preschoolers from ages 3-5.
