SUMMARY:October Stewardship Work Night (Wednesday): Trail Maintenance
DESCRIPTION:At our Wednesday Stewardship Work Night in October\, we will be focusing on trail maintenance involving brushing and trailside pruning and blazing. By the end of a growing season\, trees and shrubs have moved into the trail and can make trails more difficult to follow and less interesting to walk on. This evening\, we will be walking a trail to clean up the trail for winter and make sure it is easy to follow by cutting back vegetation and checking trail blazes. We will discuss how far we should be clearing\, what cuts to make\, and what tools can be used to do it. \nClick to sign up and volunteer on this Wednesday work day!\nMore details: Participants should wear long pants\, close-toed shoes\, work gloves\, bring an appropriate amount of water\, and be prepared to work. Work days can be somewhat strenuous at times. Heavy rain will postpone the work day. These volunteer projects are for ages 14 and up. Participants 14-18 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Participants should plan to meet the Land Steward in the main parking lot at the start of the work day.

Water management is the most important part of keeping trails stable and usable. Part of controlling water is installing water diversion structures like water bars and rolling dips. These structures require periodic maintenance of removing silt and organics that have built up over the summer and fall. DESCRIPTION:Registration for this program is closed.\nExperience nature in a unique way on a guided Forest Therapy Walk throughout Baltimore Woods! Forest Therapy\, also known as “forest bathing\,” stems from a Japanese practice known as Shinrin Yoku. Led by June Leo-Randazzo\, a Certified ANFT Forest Therapy Guide\, this program invites participants to immerse themselves in nature and open their senses to the surroundings of the forest. \nExtensive scientific research has found forest therapy walks to have numerous physical health benefits including activation of the ‘rest and restore’ parasympathetic nervous system\, decreases to anxiety and depression\, improving creativity\, and much more. Your stress will peel away as your nervous system relaxes and you simply experience the medicine of the forest. \nDuring this slow\, mindful\, and quiet walk\, June will provide a series of relaxing invitations to engage all your senses\, release your mind chatter\, and deepen connections to nature\, allowing you to connect with yourself and others through nature in new ways. You will have opportunities throughout for both individual reflection and to come together as a group to listen and share what we are noticing. The 2.5 hour walk ends with a tea ceremony with wildcrafted tea foraged from the area and snacks. \nRegistration for this program closes at 3pm on Wednesday\, October 2. \nMore details: This walk is designed for ages 14 and up. DESCRIPTION:At our Saturday Stewardship Work Day in November\, we will be focusing on invasive species management. Fall is the perfect time to work on invasive species management. Nonnative shrubs can be identified year round and control in fall and winter is just as effective as in spring. Today\, we will be working in a patch of nonnative shrubs that we have worked to control on and off over the past few years. This project will clean up new plants that have come in since last year and expand the area where we have removed these plants as well as seeding native species to make the work more long lasting. DESCRIPTION:Registration for this program is closed.\nAs fall transitions towards winter\, a grand spectacle of bird migration is unfolding and the Montezuma Wetlands Complex is one of the best places in North America to see it. As we tour the most active parts of Montezuma to watch geese\, ducks\, shorebirds\, and more\, we’ll discover the stories of how they can travel so far. We’ll also learn how the history of human interactions with the wetlands have given birds a wing up. \nMore details: This program is designed for adults. Space is limited. Online pre-registration is required. This program will involve traveling to various sites by car. We will mostly be doing stationary birding and a radio tour by car along the wildlife drive. We may visit an observation tower that includes stairs. Meet at the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge visitor center at 10 am. Binoculars will be provided for those that need them. Dress warmly.

With powerful telescopes and a wealth of knowledge\, Bob Piekiel is your tour guide to the stars and planets\, revealing the secrets of the far away\, inspiring us to think about how special our little green and blue ball in space is. This is the famous Leonid meteor shower\, which can be highly unpredictable. DESCRIPTION:Through time\, the sounds of nature have inspired wonderful musical\, poetic\, and artistic dreams all around the world: from rushing waterfalls\, to gentle drops of rain and melting icicles….to birdsong and crickets…and so much more. \n\n\n\nDrawing upon the diverse sounds of nature throughout the four seasons\, Bells & Motley are excited to bring audiences on a musical journey using a gamut of historical instruments for a good measure of surprise: A beautiful introduction to the evocative connection between music and nature. \n\n\n\nThis concert will feature historic instruments and music to highlight a collection of meaningful traditions from different cultures. Our Baltimore Woods Nature Center setting\, surrounded by forest\, will bring us to especially focus on the connection of music and wonder. Our December meeting will take place on December 7 from 10:30 AM to Noon when we will be discussing Winter World by Bernd Heinrich. DESCRIPTION:Registration for this program is closed.\nExperience nature in a unique way on a guided Forest Therapy Walk throughout Baltimore Woods! Forest Therapy\, also known as “forest bathing\,” stems from a Japanese practice known as Shinrin Yoku. Led by June Leo-Randazzo\, a Certified ANFT Forest Therapy Guide\, this program invites participants to immerse themselves in nature and open their senses to the surroundings of the forest. \nExtensive scientific research has found forest therapy walks to have numerous physical health benefits including activation of the ‘rest and restore’ parasympathetic nervous system\, decreases to anxiety and depression\, improving creativity\, and much more. Your stress will peel away as your nervous system relaxes and you simply experience the medicine of the forest. \nDuring this slow\, mindful\, and quiet walk\, June will provide a series of relaxing invitations to engage all your senses\, release your mind chatter\, and deepen connections to nature\, allowing you to connect with yourself and others through nature in new ways. You will have opportunities throughout for both individual reflection and to come together as a group to listen and share what we are noticing. The 2.5 hour walk ends with a tea ceremony with wildcrafted tea foraged from the area and snacks. \nRegistration for this program closes at 3pm on Wednesday\, December 11. \nMore details: This walk is designed for ages 14 and up. Led by June Leo-Randazzo\, a Certified ANFT Forest Therapy Guide\, this program invites participants to immerse themselves in nature and open their senses to the surroundings of the forest. \nExtensive scientific research has found forest therapy walks to have numerous physical health benefits including activation of the ‘rest and restore’ parasympathetic nervous system\, decreases to anxiety and depression\, improving creativity\, and much more. Your stress will peel away as your nervous system relaxes and you simply experience the medicine of the forest. \nDuring this slow\, mindful\, and quiet walk\, June will provide a series of relaxing invitations to engage all your senses\, release your mind chatter\, and deepen connections to nature\, allowing you to connect with yourself and others through nature in new ways. You will have opportunities throughout for both individual reflection and to come together as a group to listen and share what we are noticing. The 2 hour walk ends with a tea ceremony with wildcrafted tea foraged from the area and snacks. \nRegistration for this program closes at 3pm on Wednesday\, January 8. \nMore details: This walk is designed for adults. Space is limited. Pre-registration is required. You will be notified ahead of the program on where to park and meet on the day of the walk. The walk will take place if it rains or snows.
