SUMMARY:Blacksmithing Workshop: Forge Your Own Fire Poker
DESCRIPTION:Make your own fire poker from red hot steel using the ancient craft of blacksmithing! This three hour hands-on class will introduce you to blacksmithing and working with hot iron to make useful objects. You will learn techniques like drawing out\, bending\, twisting\, scrolling\, and more to create a unique fire poker to take home with you. We will also cover correct hammer technique and use of anvils\, vises\, and tongs. Come and spend an evening making your own hand-made item. \n\n\n\n\nLocal artist blacksmith Mark Teece will be teaching you how to forge red hot steel using traditional techniques from this ancient craft. Mark is an artist blacksmith who has been teaching for 10 years and is a patient teacher of this craft. He provides excellent instruction in forging techniques and individual help as the classes are small with a maximum of 8 students. Mark’s own work includes a number of public art projects\, architectural ironwork\, and bespoke forged ironwork for the home including tables\, artwork\, and fireplace tools. You can follow his work on Instagram @thebritishblacksmith or at thebritishblacksmith.com. \n\n\n\nThe class is open to students of all skill levels and is limited to 8 students. We will provide everything you need to have an enjoyable evening. Expect to leave with basic forging skills and the knowledge needed to forge hot steel. If you have prior experience\, this class will help you refresh your skills. \n\n\n\n\nThis program is designed for adults and teens ages 16 and up.\nCost: $100 \n\nSave your spot for this blacksmithing program at Baltimore Woods!\nMore details: Space is limited. Make sure that you do wear natural fibers like cotton shirts\, jeans\, or canvas pants. Make sure that you do not wear synthetic materials like Lycra\, spandex\, nylon\, and polyester\, as these materials do not stand up to high temperatures and sparks.

SUMMARY:Fen-tastic Fens: A Stewardship Story
DESCRIPTION:This virtual program is back by popular demand! As you’re hiking along the Overlook Trail at Baltimore Woods\, you come across a large fence. What is that for? That fence protects a rare habitat in New York called a Rich Sloping Fen. Still have questions? Join us to learn about this amazing habitat and the volunteer driven effort to protect it. Hear from Don Faber-Langendoen\, an ecologist with NatureServe\, Randy Nonenmacher\, a volunteer The Woods\, and Gregory McGee\, a professor at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. DESCRIPTION:Warm nights in May turn normally secretive gray treefrogs and spring peepers into superstars! Naturalist Tom Meier takes you on a video excursion to Baltimore Woods to witness the wildest pond party of spring. Special guests include gray treefrogs\, spring peepers\, green frogs\, bull frogs\, American toads\, and more! \nSign up to view Treefrogs and Peepers\, a virtual program!\nMore details: When you register\, we’ll ask you to provide the email you’d like to use to view the program. On June 4th at 12pm\, all registered participants will receive a personal email invitation from Connect BWNC with a link to view the program directly from Vimeo. The program will be available for viewing until June 30th at 12pm\, so you can watch it more than once if you like! \nRegistration for this program will be rolling throughout the month until June 29th\, allowing participants who sign up any time during the month to receive an invitation link within 24 hours. \nFree program; suggested donation $10: We are pleased to continue to offer virtual program experiences for our community to have engaging experiences with nature and stay connected with the Baltimore Woods preserve and staff no matter where you are! DESCRIPTION:This four-week series offers hands-on experiences in nature to supplement your science curriculum. Every Tuesday\, we’ll meet up for a three hour program packed with experiments\, activities\, and outdoor exploration. Rain\, snow\, or sunshine – we will happily go outside! The cost is $40 for members; $60 for the public. Pre-registration is required and all four sessions are included in this price. Themes for each week are listed below. \nSmall But Mighty\nJune 1 from 1-4pm \nDid you know that ants can lift over 50 times their body weight? Let’s learn about the little things in nature that are often overlooked. We’ll take a closer look at nature by investigating moss\, rolling logs\, and following ants. \nMammals\nJune 8 from 1-4pm \nWhat do voles\, moles\, foxes\, and other furry animals have in common? They are all mammals! This week we will explore the lives of our furry friends through activities and games. \nNature’s Builders\nJune 15 from 1-4pm \nCalling all budding builders! Today we will be busy as beavers\, birds\, and foxes with activities\, crafts\, and games to help us create and build just like our animal friends. Grab your hard hat\, your imagination\, and let’s get building! \nWonderful Water \nJune 22 from 1-4pm \nIt falls\, it flows\, it’s fun to play in! This week we will explore water through the eyes of what lives in it and how it acts around other things. This week we’ll peruse the preserve observing the emerging wildflowers and mushrooms. What triggers these organisms to start growing again? Through activities and games we’ll discover the science behind the signs of spring.\n\nAmphibian Friends\nApril 20\, 2021 from 1-4pm\n\nWho is that under the log? It’s been a while since we’ve seen them but our amphibian friends are back! This week we will learn all about the frogs\, toads\, and salamanders living here on the preserve and the crazy adaptations that make them who they are. Get ready to observe some amazing amphibians!\n\nPonds and Streams\nApril 27\, 2021 from 1-4pm\n\nAt this time of year the water sources here at The Woods are gaining new life! To support all that life do you think the water in our streams and ponds needs to be clean? This week we’ll explore the sugar bush and learn all about the process of how we turn sap into maple syrup. Get ready to do a little taste testing of the sap and syrup\, yum! \nScience of Mud\nMarch 16\, 2021 from 1-4pm \nPlaying in mud is fun for everyone of all ages but this week we are going to dig in and explore some of the science behind mud. This program is for children ages 5-13. Themes for each week are listed below! \nRegister for Science Adventures in Nature in February!\nHow to Stay Warm\nFebruary 2\, 2021 from 1-4pm \nBurr! Staying warm in winter is tough\, even for the animals. For our first week of Science Adventures\, we’ll explore animal adaptations for keeping in the heat. As we make our way around the preserve\, we’ll learn how we can keep warm too. \nShelters in Snow\nFebruary 9\, 2021 from 1-4pm \nWe have some snow\, so let’s build snow forts! This week we’ll work together as a group to make different shelters. Through activities and games we’ll also learn about how people survived in the elements before living in modern homes. \nFinding Our Way in Winter\nFebruary 23\, 2021 from 1-4pm \nNavigating the landscape in any season is challenging if you don’t have the right tools. This week we’ll put our sense of direction to the test! As we explore\, we’ll learn about how animals navigate the winter months to find shelter and food. \n* Please note there will be no Science Adventures on February 16 as day camp will be in session. \nMore details: This program is planned to be entirely outdoors\, so please dress for the weather.
