DESCRIPTION:Late October is an exciting time to witness the wonders of fall bird migration at Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge. Join us on this guided adventure as we search for journeying migrants such as waterfowl\, shorebirds\, and more. Bring binoculars and dress for the weather. This program is intended for adults. Meet at Baltimore Woods at 9:15 to caravan to the refuge or meet at the Montezuma visitor center at 10:00am. SUMMARY:Trail School: June Explorations
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by one of the great naturalists of the 19th century\, Enos Mills\, each excursion will take us on an adventure through Baltimore Woods as we explore away from the main trails. Our 182-acre “classroom” is rich with diverse habitats\, including streams\, forests\, wetlands\, beaver ponds\, and open meadows. This four-week series runs weekly on Thursday afternoons. $40 members; $60 public. Pre-registration is required and the price includes all four weeks. Weekly themes for June are listed below\, so get ready to hit the trails! \nExploring Hidden Meadow\nJune 3 from 1-4pm \nYou never know what you’ll find in the meadow. The tall grasses\, wildflowers\, and shrubs hide little birds and attract all kinds of pollinators. What amazing things will we discover? \nHarrison’s Hideaway\nJune 10 from 1-4pm \nHave you ever found clay in a stream? Let’s go find some on our preserve! This week we’re digging for clay and exploring all the wonderful creations that can be made with this natural gift. \nHike to Boulder Brook\nJune 17 from 1-4pm \nOne of the most beloved places on the preserve\, the rocks that align the stream of Boulder Brook are a wonder to look at. Not only that\, but there’s plenty of cracks and crevices to find aquatic creatures. Let’s go explore here! \nMiami Beach\nJune 24 from 1-4pm \nIt’s summer-let’s go to the beach! This week we’ll make our way to Miami Beach for a fun day in the sun. DESCRIPTION:This four-week series offers hands-on experiences in nature to supplement your science curriculum. Every Tuesday\, we’ll meet up for a three hour program packed with experiments\, activities\, and outdoor exploration. Rain\, snow\, or sunshine – we will happily go outside! The cost is $40 for members; $60 for the public. Pre-registration is required and all four sessions are included in this price. Themes for each week are listed below. \nSmall But Mighty\nJune 1 from 1-4pm \nDid you know that ants can lift over 50 times their body weight? Let’s learn about the little things in nature that are often overlooked. We’ll take a closer look at nature by investigating moss\, rolling logs\, and following ants. \nMammals\nJune 8 from 1-4pm \nWhat do voles\, moles\, foxes\, and other furry animals have in common? They are all mammals! This week we will explore the lives of our furry friends through activities and games. \nNature’s Builders\nJune 15 from 1-4pm \nCalling all budding builders! Today we will be busy as beavers\, birds\, and foxes with activities\, crafts\, and games to help us create and build just like our animal friends. Grab your hard hat\, your imagination\, and let’s get building! \nWonderful Water \nJune 22 from 1-4pm \nIt falls\, it flows\, it’s fun to play in! This week we will explore water through the eyes of what lives in it and how it acts around other things. Join Naturalist Emily Overstrom for an inspiring virtual walk while listening to the words of famous poets. We will discover how the ephemeral wildflowers “seize the day” as they help us appreciate living in the moment. This program is designed for adults to enjoy and is free to watch (suggested donation of $10 is appreciated ~ see details below) \nSign up to watch Wildflower Walk with Famous Poets!\nMore details: When you register\, we’ll ask you to provide the email you’d like to use to view the program. On May 7th at 12pm\, all registered participants will receive a personal email invitation from Connect BWNC with a link to view the program directly from Vimeo. SUMMARY:Naturalist Field Days
DESCRIPTION:Come one\, come all to the Naturalist Field Days! This is a great opportunity for families to get outside and come to Baltimore Woods to hone your naturalist skills. As you follow the trail you’ll find self-guided naturalist stations with tools and prompts to complete fun activities\, all while exploring the wildlife and plants found here at Baltimore Woods. Families will investigate animal crime scenes\, enjoy some bird watching\, learn about tracking\, and more! At the end of the program you’ll check-in with our staff to receive your naturalist badge and take home a naturalist toolkit for future adventures at Baltimore Woods and beyond! \nSign up now for the Naturalist Field Days!\nThere will be self-guided naturalist stations set up in a round robin fashion along our trails. The path will be clearly marked indicating where the next station will be. Each station will have an activity focusing on a naturalist skill and are designed for the whole family – including both children and adults  – to participate in the fun! Stations will take approximately 7-10 min to complete and can accommodate up to 6 people. Instructions for how to complete the activity will be provided at each station. Staff members will be on hand to answer questions. This program will be entirely outside so dress for the weather! \nThe activity stations at this family program are designed for ages 2 and up!\nCost: $20 per adult; $10 per child (ages 3-17); Free for children ages 2 and under. \nTo enjoy the full program experience\, we recommend that if you’re bringing more than three children\, you should plan to have two adults in your group.  \nAt Baltimore Woods Nature Center\, the health and safety of our staff and visitors is of utmost importance. All in-person programming will follow best practices for keeping our participants safe\, including physical distancing and wearing facial coverings. \nWe believe that all people should have the opportunity to spend time in nature. DESCRIPTION:This event has sold out. We hope you will watch our website for other upcoming programs that interest you!\nMarch is the perfect time to learn how to identify trees by bark and bud. By learning a few simple shapes and textures we’ll have you recognizing leafless trees as if they were old friends. We will go for a walk on flat trails around the Atkinson Arboretum and Harrison Loop to meet the trees. Please come dressed for the weather. Pre-registration is required and due to limited capacities associated with the pandemic\, walk-ins cannot be accommodated. This program is designed for attendees that may have a “budding” interest in plant and tree identification and is recommended for ages 13 and up. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a journey back through the guided meditations from last spring to restore our minds and bodies for the 2021 season ahead!  \nJoin Naturalist Becky Wilson in a search for signs that spring is on its way! Feel revitalized through mindful musings\, inspirational nature imagery and creative nature journaling. Spring came early last year when we first filmed this virtual guided meditation hike. Though this year looks much different\, we can tap into the same restorative energies for a fresh start to this season of growth and renewal! This program is recommended for adults and is free to watch. (suggested donation $10 ~see details below). SUMMARY:Trail School: March Explorations
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by one of the great naturalists of the 19th century\, Enos Mills\, each excursion will take us on an adventure as we explore away from the main trails. Our 182-acre “classroom” is rich with diverse habitats\, including streams\, forests\, wetlands\, beaver ponds\, and open meadows. This four-week series for kids ages 5-13 runs weekly on Thursday afternoons. $40 members; $60 public. Pre-registration is required and the price includes all four weeks. Themes for each week are listed below\, so get ready for some March adventure! \nRegister for Trail School: March Explorations!\nSearching for Shelter\nMarch 4\, 2021 from 1-4pm\nWe just never know what the weather is going to be like in March. Let’s find a good place to build forts and try our best to make them weather resistant to keep out the unpredictable weather. \nInto the Sugarbush\nMarch 11\, 2021 from 1-4pm\nM is for March and Maple! As we explore the Field to Forest trail in search of towering maple trees\, we’ll learn about what the trees are doing and how they are preparing for Spring. \nTo the Overlook\nMarch 18\, 2021 from 1-4pm\nWhat’s growing out on the preserve? As we traverse the Overlook trail\, we’ll take in the views and search for fungus\, moss\, and ferns. \nAround the Boundary\nMarch 25\, 2021 from 1-4pm\nLet’s discover the different habitats along the Boundary Trail and find evidence of animals as they slowly wake up from their winter slumber. From the stream to the meadow to the forest\, who’s home will we come across? \nMore details: This program is planned to be entirely outdoors\, so please dress for the weather. This week we’ll explore the sugar bush and learn all about the process of how we turn sap into maple syrup. Get ready to do a little taste testing of the sap and syrup\, yum! \nScience of Mud\nMarch 16\, 2021 from 1-4pm \nPlaying in mud is fun for everyone of all ages but this week we are going to dig in and explore some of the science behind mud. What is it? Where can you find it? Do plants and animals live in it? We’ll answer these questions and more and maybe even make some mud pies. \nEquinox Extravaganza\nMarch 23\, 2021 from 1-4pm \nThe Spring Equinox is here! This week we’ll learn about what an equinox is and how people of the past have celebrated these turning points in the year.
