DESCRIPTION:Science Adventures in Nature is back for December! This three week series offers hands-on experiences in nature to supplement your science curriculum. Every Tuesday\, we’ll meet up for a three hour program packed with experiments\, activities\, and outdoor exploration. Rain\, snow\, or sunshine – we will happily go outside!  $30 members; $45 public. Pre-registration is required and all three sessions are included in this price. This program is for children ages 5-13. Themes for each week are listed below! \nRegister for Science Adventures in Nature\nCozy Home\, Cozy Animal\nDecember 1\, 2020 \nIn our first week of Science Adventures in Nature\, we’ll learn about the different types of homes animals build to survive the cold winter. We’ll follow their tracks to find out where they are keeping warm and build a home for ourselves too! \nPredator vs. Prey\nDecember 8\, 2020 \nThis week we are exploring predators and their prey. We’ll engage our senses to understand the different strategies and adaptations animals have to hunt or escape being hunted. Will you catch your prey or become a predator’s dinner? \nWonderful Winter Life\nDecember 15\, 2020 \nDid you know you can still find a lot of life in December? This week we will explore the preserve in search of plants\, animals\, and whatever else we come across! We’ll practice our birding skills\, count squirrels\, and search for natural materials for a fun craft. \nMore details: This program is planned to be entirely outdoors\, so please dress for the weather. Lessons are suited for ages 5-13. Students must pre-register for the entire series. Adults are encouraged\, but not required to join the group\, and must stay on-site during the program. Bring a water bottle and a small snack. At Baltimore Woods Nature Center\, the health and safety of our staff and visitors is of utmost importance. SUMMARY:Trail School: November Explorations
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by one of the great naturalists of the 19th century\, Enos Mills\, each excursion will take us on an adventure as we explore away from the main trails. Our 182-acre “classroom” is rich with diverse habitats\, including streams\, forests\, wetlands\, beaver ponds\, and open meadows. This three-week series runs weekly on Thursday afternoons. $30 members; $45 public. Pre-registration is required and the price includes all three weeks. Themes for each week are listed below\, so get ready for some November exploration! \nRegister for Trail School: November Explorations!\nRegistration Opens October 27\nBlending Into the Forest\nNovember 5\, 2020 from 1-4pm \nUsed by creatures of all shapes and size\, camouflage helps prey hide and predators stalk. As we traverse\nthe woods for places to explore\, we’ll search for camouflaged critters and observe the adaptations that\nkeep them hidden. \nThe Beaver Lands\nNovember 12\, 2020 from 1-4pm \nEvidence of beaver activity is found throughout most of the Baltimore Woods preserve. From beaver chews\nto old and current dams\, we’ll discover the wonders of these aquatic mammals through exploration! \nVenture to Peanut Hill\nNovember 19\,2020 from 1-4pm \nDo you like to build forts? Let’s hike to Peanut Hill and build a mighty fortress! We’ll explore the forests\nalong the way and play a grand game at the end of the day! \nWhat can you expect from Trail School? This program focuses on child-led learning through play and exploration with the guidance of a naturalist who knows the preserve and who will provide children with the opportunities to further their interests outside. There will be tools like critter catchers\, magnifying glasses\, and of course whatever we can make with the natural tools around us that help facilitate children deepening their curiosity and discovery. A lot of our learning will be on-the-spot and there will be imaginative play and time for each child to connect with nature in their own way. \nMore details: This program is planned to be entirely outdoors\, so please dress for the weather. This week we will be learning about the little things in nature that are often overlooked. We’ll be taking a closer look at nature by investigating moss\, looking for fungus\, and rolling logs. \nHibernate\, Migrate\, Acclimate\nNovember 17\, 2020 from 1pm – 4pm \nWill they go to sleep\, head south\, or tough it out? Find out this week as we explore the different ways animals prepare for and survive the winter! \nCSI\nNovember 24\, 2020 from 1pm – 4pm \nGet your detective skills ready! This week we will discover the different evidence that animals leave behind all over the forest. We will gain new investigation skills and try to answer the who\, why\, and where of the animal world. \n  \nMore details: This program is planned to be entirely outdoors\, so please dress for the weather. Themes for each week are listed below\, so get ready for some October exploration! \nRegister for Science Adventures in Nature!\nSigns of Fall\nOctober 6\, 2020 from 1pm – 4pm\n \nOur first day together is all about the changing season! We’ll explore why the leaves change color\, check in\non what animals at The Woods are up to\, and figure out why fall has such a specific smell. We’ll also spend\nsome time making our own nature journals to track experiments\, ideas\, and cool finds over the next few\nweeks. \nConversations in Nature\nOctober 13\, 2020 from 1pm – 4pm \nFrom warning calls and scent trails to camouflage and more\, animals use their five senses to communicate.\nToday we will follow our noses\, listen for sounds\, and practice our camouflage to communicate like the\nanimals of the forest! \nWild\, Wild\, Woods\nOctober 20\, 2020 from 1pm – 4pm \nHave you ever made your own candles or walked through the woods without a map? This week we’ll\nexplore that and much more! Let’s pretend we’re in pioneer days and discover how people used their\nsurroundings to survive. \nThe Art of Nature\nOctober 27\, 2020 from 1pm – 4pm \nThis week we will use journaling\, painting\, sketching\, and writing to bring scientific observation of the\nnatural world to life on the page and in our memories. We will let the colors\, smells\, cool sunny days\, and\nscurrying animals be our inspiration as we watch the forest change with each falling leaf. \nMore details: Lessons are suited for ages 6-12.
