DESCRIPTION:When it comes to attracting birds to your yard or other areas around your home\, planting native plants is one of the best ways that you can provide food and shelter. In this workshop\, we will discuss species of native plants that are most helpful to our feathered friends. The program will start with a brief exploration near the Interpretive Center to observe birds and the plants that they depend on. Then\, we will work on redeveloping one of our gardens to be more birdfriendly. SUMMARY:Derby Hill Field Trip and Stewardship Project
DESCRIPTION:In a single day\, hundreds and sometimes thousands of raptors and other birds may pass Derby Hill Bird Observatory on their way north along the shore of Lake Ontario. Join Naturalist and former Derby Hill Hawk Counter Anna Stunkel at Derby Hill to learn about these birds’ journeys\, get an insider’s perspective on how and why this research is conducted\, and learn some observation tips for watching raptors on the move. SUMMARY:Spring Montezuma Field Trip for Families
DESCRIPTION:As temperatures gradually warm and the days become longer\, a grand spectacle of bird migration is unfolding. The Montezuma Wetlands Complex is one of the best places in the continent to watch migrating waterbirds on their journey north. Join us for a morning adventure in search of migrating “LBBs” (little brown birds) here at Baltimore Woods. We’ll learn about how to tell them apart\, the journeys of their fall migrations\, and how the preserve provides important habitat and food for them. \nRegistration for this program has closed.\nMore details: This program is designed for teenagers and adults. Space is limited. Online pre-registration is required. Please bring binoculars if you have them. Depending on bird activity\, we may hike on moderate terrain around the Arboretum Trail and Faust Wildflower Garden\, or on some of the most difficult trails (a steeper section of the Boundary Trail and Field to Forest Trail near the lower parking lot).

DESCRIPTION:In a single day\, hundreds and sometimes thousands of raptors and other birds may pass Derby Hill Bird Observatory on their way north along the shore of Lake Ontario. Join Naturalist and former Derby Hill Hawk Counter Anna Stunkel to learn about these birds’ journeys\, get an insider’s perspective on how and why this research is conducted\, and learn some observation tips for watching raptors on the move. \nRegister to save your spot on the Derby Hill Field Trip!\nMore details: This program will meet at the North Lookout\, which is at the top of the hill on Grandview Avenue. Watch for signs directing you towards parking; if it is very muddy\, we may need to park at the bottom of the hill and go for a brief hike to the top. Depending on migration activity that day\, we may go for a walk on moderate terrain around the hedgerows. If parking at the base of the hill is required\, the hike to the top is more difficult but car rides to the top in the Baltimore Woods vehicle can be accommodated. \nPre-registration is required. \nThis program is designed for ages 12 and up. \nPlease meet the group at 10am at Derby Hill Bird Observatory.\nDress warmly and bring binoculars if you have them; a few extras will be provided in addition to spotting scopes. \n

SUMMARY:Wonderful Woodcocks
DESCRIPTION:Woodcocks are among the first birds to help us welcome the spring season. These well-camouflaged\, rotund shorebirds are known for their dramatic dance across the sky at sunrise and sunset. On a special field trip to the Central New York Land Trust’s Pleasant Valley Preserve\, which provides ideal woodcock habitat including fields and brushy areas\, we will learn about how these resourceful birds survive and thrive. \n\n\nWe hope to observe the male’s elaborate skydance courtship display\, and we will also play some games to help us learn about how woodcocks catch their prey and hide from predators. \n\n\nThis program is designed for all ages.\nPlease meet us at Pleasant Valley Preserve and carpool\, if possible\, due to limited parking.\nPlease use the directions found here.\nPlease dress for the weather.\n\nSign up for Wonderful Woodcocks!
