As we tour the most active parts of Montezuma to watch geese\, ducks\, shorebirds\, and more\, we’ll discover the stories of how they can travel so far. We’ll also learn how the history of human interactions with the wetlands have given birds a wing up.\n\nClick to register for the Montezuma Field Trip!\n\nMore details: This program is designed for adults and older children. We will mostly be doing stationary birding and a radio tour by car along the wildlife drive. We may visit an observation tower that includes stairs. Join Naturalist and former Derby Hill Hawk Counter Anna Stunkel at Derby Hill to learn about these birds’ journeys\, get an insider’s perspective on how and why this research is conducted\, and learn some observation tips for watching raptors on the move. For the second part of the trip\, we will look for birds among the hedgerows and do some optional trail work to help maintain the habitat and trail accessibility here.\n\nPlease meet the group at 10 am at Derby Hill Bird Observatory. DESCRIPTION:This program is sold out.\nBaltimore Woods Nature Center is excited to Partner with Matt Young’s Mindful Nature Expeditions to offer a series of 6 outdoor excursions between February and July of 2024. This naturalist wellness class will combine observing nature with mindfulness\, creating a practice that incorporates a heightened sense of awareness\, both in ourselves and the environment around us. Labeling or identifying species is not the only focus\, but instead\, the intention is also to slow down and notice how to use nature\, including birds\, butterflies\, trees\, flowers\, and more as our guide. This style of observation invites reciprocity\, sit-spots and self-reflection\, journaling and exploration\, and an acknowledgment of our physical and emotional responses while we engage with the outdoors. \nThis is the final of 6 sessions which will be focused on “The comfort of trees and the experiences we’ve shared together on our journey through the classes” that will take place both at Baltimore Woods Nature Center and the CNYLT Pleasant Valley Preserve. \nMore Details: This program is designed for ages 18 and up. In this workshop\, we will discuss species of native plants that are most helpful to our feathered friends. Then\, we will work on redeveloping one of our gardens to be more birdfriendly. The Montezuma Wetlands Complex is one of the best places in the continent to watch migrating waterbirds on their journey north. DESCRIPTION:Woodcocks are among the first birds to help us welcome the spring season. These well-camouflaged\, rotund shorebirds are known for their dramatic dance across the sky at sunrise and sunset. DESCRIPTION:Late October is an exciting time to witness the wonders of fall bird migration at Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge. Join Baltimore Woods Naturalists on this guided adventure as we search for journeying migrants such as waterfowl\, shorebirds\, and more. \nThis program is designed for adults and ages 15 and up. \nMeet at Baltimore Woods at 9:15 am to follow us to the refuge\, or meet at the refuge’s visitor center at 10am. \nBring binoculars and dress warm.\n \nRegister for the Fall Field Trip to Montezuma!\n

SUMMARY:Welcome\, Warblers!
DESCRIPTION:Spring is in full swing\, and this is a wonderful time to search for warblers. On this walk\, we will learn about the incredible journeys of warblers returning to their nesting grounds\, discuss tips for how to tell them apart\, and discover small ways that we can help these brilliant travelers. \nRegister to learn more about warblers with Baltimore Woods!\nMore details:  Please dress for the weather and bring binoculars if you have them. This program is recommended for ages 12 and up. We will be hiking on moderately hilly terrain. Pre-registration is required and due to limited capacities associated with the pandemic\, walk-ins cannot be accommodated. At Baltimore Woods Nature Center\, the health and safety of our staff and visitors is of utmost importance. All in-person programming will follow best practices for keeping our participants safe\, including physical distancing and wearing facial coverings. \nThis program is recommended for ages 12 and up.\nCost: $6 members; $9 public
