SUMMARY:Searching for Spring Songbirds (CLOSED)
DESCRIPTION:Mid-May is the peak time to observe migrating spring songbirds here at Baltimore Woods. These beautiful little birds often travel on long journeys spanning continents to reach their nesting grounds. In this program\, we will search for returning songbirds and learn more about where they go and the habitats that they need throughout their migration. We will also discuss ways that you can help these tiny travelers.\n\n\nRegistration for Searching for Spring Songbirds is now closed\n\n\nMore Details: Depending on bird activity\, we may follow the difficult Boundary Trail to Phillips’ Pond or on the more moderate Arboretum Trail and surrounding areas. Trail surfaces may include grass\, loose soil and gravel\, exposed roots\, and steps. Please call ahead if you have mobility needs. This program is designed for adults. Space is limited. Online pre-registration is required.

SUMMARY:Derby Hill Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Derby Hill Bird Observatory is a fascinating spot to visit and watch migrating raptors\, songbirds\, waterfowl\, and other birds. In some cases\, these birds pass the lookouts by the thousands! Join Naturalist and former Derby Hill Hawk Counter Anna Stunkel at Derby Hill to learn about these birds’ journeys\, get an insider’s perspective on how and why this research is conducted\, and learn some observation tips for watching raptors on the move. We may also spend time looking for birds in the hedgerows and on the lake.\n\n\nClick to register for the Derby Hill Field Trip\n\n\nMore Details: Please meet the group at 10 am at Derby Hill Bird Observatory. Dress warmly and bring binoculars if you have them; a few extras will be provided in addition to spotting scopes. We may plan to go for a walk on moderate terrain around the hedgerows for the second part of the program. If parking at the base of the hill is required due to mud\, the hike to the top is more difficult but car rides to the top in the Baltimore Woods vehicle can be accommodated. This program is designed for adults. Space is limited. Online pre-registration is required.

SUMMARY:Nourishing Ourselves Through Nature: The Comfort of Trees and Experiences Shared on Our Journey (SOLD OUT)
DESCRIPTION:This program is sold out.\nBaltimore Woods Nature Center is excited to Partner with Matt Young’s Mindful Nature Expeditions to offer a series of 6 outdoor excursions between February and July of 2024. This naturalist wellness class will combine observing nature with mindfulness\, creating a practice that incorporates a heightened sense of awareness\, both in ourselves and the environment around us. Labeling or identifying species is not the only focus\, but instead\, the intention is also to slow down and notice how to use nature\, including birds\, butterflies\, trees\, flowers\, and more as our guide. This style of observation invites reciprocity\, sit-spots and self-reflection\, journaling and exploration\, and an acknowledgment of our physical and emotional responses while we engage with the outdoors. \nThis is the final of 6 sessions which will be focused on “The comfort of trees and the experiences we’ve shared together on our journey through the classes” that will take place both at Baltimore Woods Nature Center and the CNYLT Pleasant Valley Preserve. \nMore Details: This program is designed for ages 18 and up. SUMMARY:Gardening for the Birds
DESCRIPTION:When it comes to attracting birds to your yard or other areas around your home\, planting native plants is one of the best ways that you can provide food and shelter. In this workshop\, we will discuss species of native plants that are most helpful to our feathered friends. The program will start with a brief exploration near the Interpretive Center to observe birds and the plants that they depend on. Then\, we will work on redeveloping one of our gardens to be more birdfriendly.
